World Restrooms

Let's just say you have traveled to another country, but can't speak their language. Your at a public building somewhere and suddenly need to use a restroom. What sort of signs would you look out for? Here is a collection of weird restroom signs around the world.

I only posted this one because it's the only one from a different language that I actually know how to speak. It's from Indonesia.

So, would you really expect most of these toilet signs when looking for one? Yes, you can tell which is which, but who actually looks out for these signs????

Optical Illusions

We all know optical illusions are just trickery on the mind and eyes, but there are so many good ones out there, I decided I'd make a post about it! Below are some that tricked me, or just look good. Thanks to Mighty Optical Illusions where I got most of the illusions from. I have numbered them for you, in case of discussions.

6. Please note that this is street art! They're just 2D paintings on the ground! Now does it confuse you? (below)

11. The following is also street art. It is 2D,
12. There was no Photoshop used at all during the next photo. Only a fabulous painter and his brush (and obviously a bit of paint!)

That's all I have time for right now, but I may post more in the near future. So watch out!

My blog won't appear on Google!

Yes, this is often a 'problem', when you first make a blog, you often want people to instantly visit it. But that's not the case. And then, when you search your blog using Google, it doesn't appear. That's the time when everybody becomes confused and annoyed, after all, no one is able to view the posts you worked so long on. But don't worry, I have listed 2 reasons why it might not be showing up, and what you can do to help the problem.

1. The most likely of all the reasons is that you only just created your blog and Google doesn't know about it yet. Quite often it will take up to 6 weeks for GoogleBot, a web crawler, to find it. Think about all those new web sites that are created every day, and one little program has to find and list them all ! It finds them by visiting a web page, clicking on all the links in that page, then clicking all the links on those pages and so on. So if you don't have your blog as a link on any pages at all, it will probably take longer for GoogleBot to find it. Think, what if you ran a search engine, and every day had to go and find all the new web sites, and list them? How hard life would be!

2. Your privacy settings might be set to not allow your blog to be seen as a Google Search. Before assuming anything, check your settings.

If you believe that 1is your problem, but you don't want to wait that long, there's 2 things that might help speed up the process. You could enter your URL into this site: http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

If your site is a blog, then you could also enter the URL here: http://blogsearch.google.com/ping

Otherwise, there is nothing more you can do except wait, and write lots of posts. The more posts you have, the chance someone will stumble upon your blog by searching a keyword into Google.

A picture is worth a thousand words

A picture is worth a thousand words...literally! I was browsing the internet yesterday when I found this awesome way of making photo's using information. It's called ascii art. To check out the tutorial on how to do it, here it is:

Here's a couple I've made:

It is best if you move back to admire, but look closely to read!

Things you can do with very little when your bored

This is one of the major problems facing us on weekends: What are we going to do with ourselves for 2 whole days?!?! I have composed a list of things you can do with very little or nothing at all that might help you with your struggle to defeat boredom. At the end of each idea, I have included how long this activity will most likely keep you occupied for.

1. Find a nice curb, maybe out the front of your local shopping centre, and stand on the edge. Close your eyes and prepare yourself, as if you were about to step off a cliff. When your ready, keeping your eyes closed, step off the curb and onto the road, screaming the whole way down. (1-5mins)

2. Wash a tree. Best if you do this on a tree that is not rough. Make your goal to try and wash the tree so well that it shines. (10mins)

3. Try not to think about purple penguins. The more you try not to think about it, the more you think about them because your trying not to. Confusing, right? (1-5mins)

4. Use your secret mind power. Everyone has one. Watch people walk past and try to make them do stuff by thinking about it really hard. For example, for a lady to drop her handbag, or a man to stumble. Remember, practise makes perfect. (Depends on how many people walk past)

5. Prank call people. To make it funny, get the receiver of your call to believe a ridiculous story or make weird noises to test the phone line. To get you started, try calling fast food restaurants complaining that when you opened your meal at home, your burger bun had pink spots all over it. (10-60mins)

6. Stare at the back of someone until they turn around. Pretty self explanatory. (1-5mins)

7. Pick up a dog, or any other small pet, and give it a look at things from your perspective. Because really, how many times has your guinea pig seen your desk, or the top of your fridge? (1-5mins)

8. Look at things from a dog's perspective. Pretty much the same thing as 7, but the other way round. (1-5mins)

9. Sharpen a carrot. Trust me. It will always break whenever it gets close to sharpening. Very frustrating.

10. Make experimental cupcakes. Or cookies. Just add what you think would go into a nice cookie or cupcake, and cook in the oven until you think their cooked. Best done with a friend. (30-60mins)

These are ten quick things that could help you get over your boredom. But don't forget to experiment. Try adding two or more of these together, do them with a friend etc. It makes it a lot more fun.

School Project Ideas?

Every so often, your teacher will decide it's time to do a project. Yes, I'm fine with projects, apart from the fact that if we don't do something different each time, we get lower marks! So I've decided to write a list of interesting ideas to present a project, from the most obvious to weirdest of them all.

Create an old fashioned poster. Quite often these days, with all the technology, not many people use posters any more. But I personally like posters better, especially if they have little 'kiddy' things on them, like lift-the-flaps and 3D bits.

Make a PowerPoint. I know this sounds too boring, but there are some really good ways of making power points interesting. You could use the animations and all that built in stuff, or make buttons on photo's, so when  you click on them it tells you about that part. For example, if I did it on the human body, I could have a button on parts of the body, and if someone were to click on the button that was on the arm, it would take them to a new presentation slide telling them about the arm.

Use Comic Life to create a comic. I know that sounds a bit weird, but it's good fun, and no one else would think of doing that, unless it's a program that's at your school. Comic Life is a program that allows you to put in text and pictures to create a comic-like poster, or a comic (hence the name).

Write a book about your chosen item. Have a title page, a contents page, all the info, a sources page at the back and a blurb. Staple it together and you have your very own book, or use a binder to bind it.

Make a movie. This one is nearly always the funnest, especially when you get friends involved. A quick tip, though, don't make it a boring movie where people just get up and talk, make it interesting. For example, if you were doing your presentation on a bear, get someone to dress up in a bear suit and have a couple of friends going out 'camping' who then get attacked by a bear and learn a lot of stuff. Make it humorous, then people will want to watch it again.

Create your very own website! Using a blogging site, or a mac program called iWeb, you could make your own site all about your chosen subject. Very simple yet different.

Act out a play. You best ask your teacher first, but get together with a couple of friends and rehearse a play.

Make a puppet show. This one can be a little tricky, but is awesome if it works. Buy some cheap puppets, or make your own. Then either record it or give a live performance.

Give a speech. Most people think is the most boring thing to do, especially if your the one who has to listen to it. I agree, but only because people don't know how to do a speech anymore. Bring in a couple of items relating to your subject, add some humour and speak with an attitude, not in a monotone! Use exclamation marks!  Use ... (whatever their called)! Use questions marks! These punctuations aren't here for nothing! Use them!

Draw a flip note. This would probably be the longest and hardest of all, but the most effective to add to a presentation, especially a speech. But I've tried them and gave up before long because it was just too tedious.

Make a quiz after your presentation, to test if your audience were really listening. You can choose whether or not to tell them about the quiz before hand, it's your presentation after all.

Make a Prezi. Prezi is an online program (search it with google) that uses zoom like never before. And what's better, it's free to sign up!

Scratch is game maker which, once you learn how to use it, can be very effective. Imagine making an educational game for your class. That would surely have to get you some A's in presentation!

Use garage band or a similar program to make a voice recording. Invite a couple of friends to join in, and make it a radio station news update etc.

I'm sure there are many more ideas out there, so don't heavily rely on this post to help you. Combine these together and you'll find totally new ideas. Take Prezi for example. You can upload YouTube videos to a Prezi. So make a short movie, publish it to YouTube and then into your Prezi! Simple as that!

Disgusting Delicacies

Today, in my Indonesian class, my teacher was talking about how people eat stray dogs over there. People who sell food in a stand on the side of a road would just go looking for stray dogs and, when they found them, would cook them and sell the meat. Apparently it's really tasty to Indonesians, but personally I think it's just plain gross. And what about the dogs? Some child could be bawling there eyes out because their dog ran away, so the mother might take them out for a while and buy them some stuff to make the child feel better. But i the end, that poor little child could be eating his or her own pet! But anyway, that got me thinking...what are some of the weirdest foods to eat out there in the world?

1. Soft-boiled Fetal Duck

How gross does that look? Soft-boiled Fetal Duck, also known as balut, is found mainly in the Philippines and Vietnam. Balut is a fertilised duck egg, allowed to develop for a few weeks before being boiled. Once served, most peel back the outer-shell and enjoy 'slurping' the duck, beak, feathers, bones and everything else found in a small bird, with a pinch of salt.

2. Alive Octopus

Octopus, in a soup or something like that, might actually be not that bad (if I wasn't vegetarian). But ALIVE? No thanks! Alive Octopus is a common dish in Asia, whether it be a big octopus served in bite sized pieces, still wriggling, or a couple of small octopus that are trying to escape from your plate. According to some people I know, raw octopus is exactly how you would imagine it, rubbery, chewy and fairly tasteless. I've even heard some people say that if they ate a octopus tentacle, sometimes the suction cup would stick on the way down. But no one could say anything about what a live octopus tasted like, because they couldn't bring themselves to eat something that was still alive, feeling with pain every bite you take out of it...

3. Fermented 'Stink Heads'
After looking at this, I'm not sure I even want to write much about it. So I will quickly explain:
Stink heads are found in Alaska. They are salmon heads that have been left in a fermenting pit (large holes in the ground), a plastic or wooden barrel and maybe even a plastic food storage bag, where it is then left for a couple of weeks. When harvested, it is served as a mushy sort-of dish.

4. Fugu
I'm pretty sure a fugu fish, found in Japan, aren't really that gross. In fact, they're rather cute. But fatally poisonous. If you've watched The Simpsons, you'll know what I'm talking about when Homer Simpson eats a 'poisonous fish'. Well, this is that exact fish. If not cut properly, So even though it's not really disgusting at all, I felt it still deserved a place on this list. Annual fugu poisoning deaths are less than they were a few years back, but many still die from it. No antidote exists for this sort of poison, so the question is: Why keep serving it?

5. Bat Soup
The way this is made is by catching a fruit, mouse or fox bats alive. They then throw them into a large pot of boiling water, still alive. Finally, once boiled to the desired texture, it's made into a paste using thai herbs. Or, to make bat soup, they add several other ingredients with water.

6. Baby Mice Wine
In Korea, this is meant to be a healing tonic, although I'm not certain on what it's actually meant to be healing. Apparently it tastes like raw gasoline. Even worse though, the mice aren't just in there for looks and taste, there there to actually swallow! How revolting!

7. Kopi Luwak
Now this one definitely deserves to be on this list! These are made into coffee and are made from coffee beans. Seems normal enough so far. But it's the process these beans go through. The coffee beans are swallowed and digested by a civet cat and then excreted whole. You then make the coffee like you would with any other. Apparently the acids and enzymes in the civets digestive system apply special qualities to the coffee that make it a special delicacy.

8. Widgety Grubs
If your from Australia, you'll know what I'm talking about when I say widgety grubs. Aboriginals eat them. Their about the size of a human thumb. You eat the raw, even while their still wriggling to escape. The main rule about eating widgety grubs is to always bite their heads off first, other wise they'll bite you!

That's as far as I'm going to go tonight, as I have other things I should be doing. Look out for a sequel to this post, as I'm sure there are even more disgusting foods out there, just waiting to be picked to be written about on here!
